Horror is and has consistently been one of the most commercially successful film genres around. Also, some of the most artistically renowned and visionary filmmakers of all time started out in horror and/or made significant contributions to the genre. To name but a few: David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Roman Polanski, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Jackson, Guillermo Del Toro.
Furthermore, every film producing country in the world has spawned its share of horror movies. So the big question is: whatever happened to ‘Netherhorror’ since Dick Maas won the Grand Prix of Avoriaz 1984 with his groundbreaking film the lift? The answer: nothing much - until in 2005/2006 a veritable tsunami of no less than five Netherhorrorfilms rolled in.
Wednesday, dead end, slaughter night, horizonica and complexx seemed to contradict the old adage, upheld by many officials in the Dutch film business, that The Netherlands has no ‘fantastic’ tradition in literature and culture in general, and therefore no basis for generating horrorfilms.
Then it became silent - until now.
Producers Jan Doense (founder of the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival and known as Mr. Horror) and Herman Slagter (originator of fighting fish, the first ever Dutch martial arts movie) have joined forces to create House of Netherhorror, an Amsterdam and Rotterdam based production house devoted solely to the making of Dutch horror movies.
House of Netherhorror proudly announces its first slate of four original Dutch horror movies, to be shot in 2011.
